In an age where we are bombarded with digital imagery and fleeting experiences, figurative painting offers a respite—an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the human experience. By depicting recognizable subjects, such as figures or portraits, figurative paintings can resonate strongly with viewers. For example, Kehinde Wiley's paintings evoke a strong emotional response by recontextualizing historical portraiture with contemporary subjects. He often portrays everyday individuals from marginalized communities as heroic figures against vibrant, ornate backgrounds, inviting viewers to emotionally engage with their stories and identities. The Ghanaian painter, Amoako Boafo, paints from his personal experiences, uplifting Black representation, while focusing on diversity, autonomy and ultimately, empowerment.
