Embracing the Resurgence of Figurative Painting

A Perspective from Jennifer Bec Hirshfield

The Emotional Connection:

Figurative painting holds a unique power which evokes a personal, identifiable, and emotional connection between the artwork and the viewer. In an age where we are bombarded with digital imagery and fleeting experiences, figurative painting offers a respite—an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the human experience. By depicting recognizable subjects, such as figures or portraits, figurative paintings can resonate strongly with viewers. For example, Kehinde Wiley's paintings evoke a strong emotional response by recontextualizing historical portraiture with contemporary subjects. He often portrays everyday individuals from marginalized communities as heroic figures against vibrant, ornate backgrounds, inviting viewers to emotionally engage with their stories and identities. The Ghanaian painter, Amoako Boafo, paints from his personal experiences, uplifting Black representation, while focusing on diversity, autonomy and ultimately, empowerment.

As an artist, I strive to capture the essence of human connection and the beauty of nature through the figures and subjects in my work.

The Return to Craftsmanship:

In the midst of the digital revolution, the resurgence of figurative painting signifies a return to the appreciation of craftsmanship and the tactile nature of traditional art forms. Figurative painting demands a mastery of technical skills, from anatomy and composition to color theory and brushwork. The dedication required to hone these skills and the labor-intensive process of creating a figurative painting imbues the artwork with a sense of authenticity and human touch. As an artist who embraces the heavy application of paint and the variety of textures, I find immense joy in bringing the human body to life in an expressive and joyful way.

Nurturing the Narrative:

Figurative painting has a rich history of storytelling, allowing artists to convey narratives, social commentary, or personal experiences through visual imagery. In a world where narratives are often reduced to bite-sized fragments, figurative art offers a platform for complex and nuanced storytelling. Each brushstroke and composition choice carries intention and symbolism, inviting viewers to contemplate and engage with the artwork on multiple levels. I am passionate about incorporating narratives into my paintings, exploring the connections between humans and their environment, and conveying the interplay of energy and emotion.

The Bridge between Tradition and Contemporary Art:

The resurgence of figurative painting is not a rejection of contemporary art forms but rather an integration of traditional techniques with modern sensibilities. Artists today are embracing figurative painting as a means of bridging the gap between the past and the present, combining classical methods with innovative approaches. Figurative art allows for experimentation and personal expression while honoring the rich legacy of the art form. As a California artist influenced by the Bay Area Figurative movement, I draw inspiration from the masters who came before me while infusing my work with my unique perspective and contemporary vision.

Conclusion:

The renewed popularity of figurative painting by artists such as Kehinde Wiley and Amoako Boafo is a testament to the enduring power of human connection, emotional resonance, and the craftsmanship of traditional art forms. As an artist who has also devoted my creative journey to figurative painting, I am thrilled to witness this resurgence and contribute to the continued growth of this art movement. Figurative painting allows us to explore the depth of the human experience, tell captivating stories, and create meaningful connections with viewers. Let us celebrate the beauty and timelessness of figurative art, as it continues to captivate and inspire both artists and art enthusiasts around the world.
